The Nigerian Communications Commission warned that Telecoms giant, MTN Nigeria is yet to renew its Universal Access Service License (UASL).

This was disclosed in a statement by NCC’s Public Affairs Director, Dr Ikechukwu Adinde, in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

What the NCC is saying

”The attention of the NCC is drawn to a publication in an online media titled: “Govt renews MTN Nigeria licence amid 20 years of GSM Phones.

”The publication was to the effect that the mobile operating licence of MTN had been renewed by the Commission for another period of ten years.

“The online publication which cited regulatory filings by the NCC as its source stated that MTN Nigeria, the nation’s largest Mobile Network Operator (MNO), has secured regulatory approval of the renewal of its operating licence for another 10 years with effect from Sept. 1, 2021.

They added that MTN has already applied for a renewal of the UASL, however, the application is going through required regulatory measures, citing that the statement was guidance for all stakeholders on the process of the license so far.

Nairametrics reported earlier today that MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Glo Mobile, 9Mobile, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and other telecoms operators made a revenue of N2.88 trillion, up from N2.516 trillion recorded in 2019. This represents a 12.6% increase.

NCC announced last week that it launched an annual operating regulatory levy to ensure that all licensees are properly assessed towards regulatory expectations and standards.

Prof. Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission stated this at the Public Inquiry on two regulatory instruments draft last week in Abuja.

Danbatta noted that the two key regulatory instruments which were tailored to meet the challenges and to further strengthen the market structure of the industry are the Annual Operating Regulations and the Frequency Spectrum Regulations, which fees and pricing fall under.
